Empowering African Women

The African Women’s Federation of South Australia is a non-Government, non-profit umbrella organisation representing the interests of African women and their families in the South Australian Community.

The organisation was founded in the early 2000’s by four Women: Mrs Rita Kamara, Mrs Ayen Kuol, Mrs Carla Tongun and Mrs Hiacinta Msomi; as a response to the needs of arrival of African migrants.

Our Aim

To encourage and provide a forum for African women’s views in order to influence policy in government and to ensure the accessibility to main stream services, appropriate services, representation on decision making bodies and participation in all aspects of Australian society for African women and youth.

Our Objectives

  • To represent African women and youth in the community
  • To adopt an advocacy role in relation to the needs of the above mentioned target group
  • To play a consultative, educative and informative role in its interaction with various organisations and institutions
  • To provide assistance and information to African migrant and refugee women and youth
  • To foster and increase the broad community’s awareness, knowledge, sensitivity and understanding of the needs, interests and concerns of African migrant and refugee women and youth
  • To promote the enactment of legislation and the implementation of procedures which will advance and benefit the target group
  • To inspire, educate and instruct with a view to advancing the opportunities for and condition of the target group in political, civil and social fields as well as in industry, commerce, the professions and the community in general
  • To support, initiate and undertake research into issues related to African migrant, refugee women and youth, thus contributing to the development of their ideologies
  • Design and implement culturally relevant programs, events and activities
  • Foster the preservation and promotion of African culture, language and traditions.
